About The Fold

Writing that earns
your attention.

The Fold is an independent editorial platform. We publish long-form essays and interviews on design, technology, and culture — without advertising or algorithms.

Why we started The Fold.

The Fold began in 2021 as a single essay about why good design so rarely makes the news. That piece reached forty thousand readers in a week — mostly through forwarded emails and bookmarks — without a single social media post. It was a signal that something was missing from the media landscape: writing about ideas, not takes.

Today The Fold publishes on no fixed schedule. Each piece is finished when it is finished. We have no investors, no advertisers, and no algorithm to please. Our only obligation is to the reader's time — and to the craft of putting sentences together in the right order.

Our editorial principles

No schedule

We publish when a piece is genuinely ready — not to hit a cadence. Frequency is a symptom of content; we are interested in writing.

Respect for time

Every piece earns its length. We cut ruthlessly. If a point can be made in two sentences, it will not take four paragraphs.

No advertising

We have never taken advertising and never will. Our only incentive is for readers to find each piece worth their time.

Reader first

Every editorial decision is filtered through one question: does this serve the reader, or does it serve us? The reader wins every time.
